Letter: Don’t make SLC into LA

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) In a long photographic exposure, car and bus taillights and headlights draw long red and white lights during evening traffic patterns along State Street, Jan. 10, 2019.

Salt Lake City is right next to amazing mountains and has a booming economy, so it is no surprise that people want to live here.

There is no way to prevent growth in the valley, but we do have a choice where we build housing. We could become a version of Los Angeles if we allow unplanned growth, or we could move in a different direction.

If we build dense housing next to public transportation, we can reduce traffic and maintain open space. Allowing duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes in single-family neighborhoods will keep housing costs down and make biking, walking and public transportation more feasible.

We cannot stop growth, but we do not have to become as congested and polluted as Los Angeles.
