Letter: We must be one nation again

(AP Photo/J. David Ake) In this Jan. 21, 2018 file photo, lights shine inside the U.S. Capitol Building as night falls in Washington.

As I have grown older, I have watched things change, from the gray hairs in my ear to the slowness in my gait. One thing does not ever change, however, and that is the understanding of our government.

Arguments, disputes, even fights occur between Republicans and Democrats over simple matters and serious ones. As time has gone by, I have seen these disagreements become worse and worse, at an alarming rate. The subjects are often over things I am sure they truly agree upon, but will not admit!

Why is this happening more and more? It’s as if we as a country are truly split in two.

This must come to an end, my fellow Americans, be you Republican or Democrat. We are one country, one nation. I remember, with fondness, a saying we would speak every morning before class: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, ONE NATION, under God, with liberty and justice for all.”
