Letter: Gas tax hike would hurt rural Utahns

Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune Drivers line up at Costco in Salt Lake to fill up their tanks with some of the cheapest gas prices around on Friday, Jan. 23, 2015.

As a rural Utahn, I would like to challenge Gov. Gary Herbert’s campaign to add a 10-cent gas tax. From the perspective of the Wasatch Front, this may make sense. Only 10 cents a gallon means $100 million for our schools. This is a win-win, right?

Not really.

Please consider (for once) the rural Utah areas where we have to drive long distances to job sites, mines, power plants, etc. Also consider there are very few jobs in small towns within walking distance. And don't forget there is no public transportation afforded to the majority of rural Utah like there is between Provo and Davis County.

The burden will be felt mainly in these areas where the local economy is nowhere near as strong as the metro areas.
