Letter: For marijuana, doctors are better than dealers

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Supporters and opponents of Utah’s medical marijuana initiative joined with Utah Gov. Gary Herbert and legislative leaders Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018, at the Utah Capitol to announce a “shared vision” for cannabis policy.

Listening to the reasons to keep marijuana as a controlled substance, and out of the hands of doctors and patients, I hear all about what would happen if kids get hold of it, or about pot dispensaries opening everywhere and anywhere, or about people even using it recreationally.

What I have not heard is why lawmakers and opponents are so willing to keep the current marijuana “dispensaries” and “distributors” in business, i.e. gangs, cartels, drug dealers, smugglers, foreign criminals, etc. Because that is what we as a country have gotten by keeping it illegal and “out of the hands” of those who choose to use it.

I would trust a doctor over a dealer any day, wouldn’t you?
