Letter: City Weekly provides information The Tribune no longer does

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Paul Huntsman, owner of The Salt Lake Tribune, addresses staff members, Tuesday May 8, 2018.

We readers are well aware that our beloved Tribune is in a fight for its life. I for one will hang in as long as there is a paper. I appreciate the excellent reporting Tribune staff is known for concerning local issues. National news is another story. Skimpy Tribune coverage is troubling, but that is available through many in-depth printed sources like The New York Times and Washington Post, reliable to get informed of the “breaking news.”

Focusing on local news must continue to be The Tribune's main appeal for subscribers, but too many things that affect quality of life here in Utah have been sacrificed in the name of economy: TV schedule, cultural coverage, outdoor columns and movies. In the time since all movie listings have disappeared, I have not gone to a single movie because there is no way to see — in the paper — what movies are of interest and available. (Cinema advertising has also gone down the drain, and that is lost revenue for the paper that is obviously not worth trying to reclaim. I wonder why.) Fortunately, sudoku and similar small entertaining pleasures have survived the shrinkage.

But take heart, folks. In spite of The Tribune’s cuts, there is movie and event information available in the free City Weekly. Think I’ll go track down a copy as soon as I go through today’s paper. That won’t take long.
