Letter: By supporting Trump, Utahns will get the government we deserve

How does Donald Trump continue to have support of 40 percent nationally and even a higher rating in Utah?

Hardly a day goes by without a scandal, and many days have multiple embarrassments.

Most of his supporters are people who are either anti-gun restrictions, anti-women’s rights, anti-immigration, anti-civil rights, anti-gay, anti-NATO, anti-free press, or anti-elitist. And of course anti-Obama. What these various antis have in common is they are all anti-government.

These Trumpers hate government, especially the federal government. As Ronald Reagan famously stated: The government is not the solution, but the problem. And for over 40 years talk radio, then Fox News, have been putting out half-truths and unrealistic simple solutions in their partisan criticism of government.

They voted for Trump and still support him because he fulfills their misguided dreams — dreams that Trump’s incompetence and attacks on our institutions are leading to less government and will take the country back to the good old days.

Midterm success for moderates is obviously critical if Trump is to be checked. Somehow gerrymandering has to be overcome to elect Democrats and Republicans who understand the danger this demigod represents. Yes, there are a few reasonable Republicans — well, maybe not in this state. As Thomas Jefferson stated, in a democracy you get the government you deserve.
