Letter: If Utah is truly pro-family, we need to support undocumented families

FILE - In this June 15, 2018 file photo, Chris Olson, of Lake Wallenpaupack, Pa., holds a sign outside Lackawanna College where U.S. Attorney Jeff Sessions spoke on immigration policy and law enforcement actions, in Scranton, Pa. The Trump administration's move to separate immigrant parents from their children on the U.S.-Mexico border has turned into a full-blown crisis in recent weeks, drawing denunciation from the United Nations, Roman Catholic bishops and countless humanitarian groups. I am a born and raised Utahn and have grown up hearing how pro-family this state is. I see now that this is rhetoric, otherwise our senate and congressional delegates would openly fight against the practice of separating undocumented children from their parents at the border.

These families have gone through harrowing circumstances to get to our borders, most looking for asylum and trying to follow the laws we have set. Punishing the parents by separating them is cruel and will cause long-lasting problems to these people.

If we are ever to claim that we support families again, then we need to support all families — especially the ones who need us the most.
