Letter: If America had ultra-right immigration policies in the past, who among us would be here today?

(File photo) Ron Mortensen, a co-founder of the Utah Coalition on Illegal Immigration and a retired U.S. foreign service officer, has published a critical account of LDS Church involvement in the issue of illegal immigration.

To Ronald Mortensen, Donald Trump’s pick to oversee immigration and refugee programs:

As a former United States Agency for International Development employee, having worked in Ukraine and Moldova, I am always interested in what fellow USAID consultants are doing. My goodness, I have never heard such strident views about Dreamers and immigration policy in general. I’ve read some of your opinions in other sources just to make sure the press was not biased in reporting, and apparently you are quite consistent.

As a Utah resident and former USAID consultant and retired professor, I am embarrassed that your name would emerge for this post — but not surprised. Thank heavens our ancestors didn’t have such ultra-right immigration policies to address. Perhaps there wouldn’t be any Mortensen or Mouritsen Utah families who could celebrate their Scandinavian roots.
