Letter: Fight carbon emissions by applying a fee on carbon at the source — the well, mine or port of entry

(Steve Griffin | The Salt Lake Tribune) A view from inside the Carbon Power Plant, a 60-year-old coal-fired electical-generating station, near Helper, Utah Friday, September 27, 2013.The plant faces an early retirement in the face of EPA's new emission standards for mercury and other toxic pollutants. The new rules require old plants to install pollution-control equipment, but the Carbon plant's setting in a narrow canyon make that impossible.

Earth Day was April 22, and perhaps the greatest threat to the environment is climate change. I’m glad that on April 13, Mia Love, my representative in Congress, co-sponsored House Resolution 825, recognizing the impacts of climate change and supporting polices that address the causes and effects of climate change. I’m pleased that 36 Democrats and 36 Republicans, including Love, are members of the Climate Solution Caucus in the House of Representatives.

I believe the best way to reduce carbon emissions would be to apply a fee on carbon at the source: the well, mine or port of entry. This fee would be returned to the American people in the form of a periodic dividend that would be shared equally with every American.
