Letter: Treat women who make the hard choice to have an abortion with empathy

(Francisco Kjolseth / The Salt Lake Tribune) Signs were posted Tuesday on trash cans at the Utah Capitol in opposition to HB205, which would criminalize doctors who perform an abortion based on a diagnosis of Down syndrome.

Concerning the March 10 article, checking up on health bills lawmakers considered, by Luke Ramseth:

When a woman goes into a clinic to ask for an abortion, she has already gone through the excruciatingly difficult process of deciding on the procedure and has set her mind to it. Making her wait three days, watch a video and/or do an interactive program only adds to the pain of this experience, especially if there is already trauma around this pregnancy such as sexual assault. These waiting periods, education videos, and counseling do not actually stop the woman from the abortion but I would love to do a study that analyzes the amount of trauma that is added to her experience (Roberts & Upadhyay, 2016). I know this is a very hard thing to do for conservatives, but please think of the trauma you are causing.

Have some empathy for these women that have a hard choice to make in the first place, stop adding hoops for her to jump through, especially unconstitutional ones.
