Letter: As a combat vet I can safely say an AR-15 shouldn't get in civilian hands

FILE - In this Jan. 28, 2013, file photo, firearms training unit Detective Barbara J. Mattson, of the Connecticut State Police, holds up a Bushmaster AR-15 rifle, the same make and model of gun used by Adam Lanza in the Sandy Hook School shooting, during a hearing of a legislative subcommittee in Hartford, Conn. Remington, the gunmaker beset by falling sales and lawsuits tied to the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, said Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, that it has reached a financing deal that would allow it to continue operating as it files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. It happened again. The 18th shooting this year. My representatives, Mia Love and Mike Lee refuse to do anything about the availability of an AR-15.

As a combat veteran I have some information for my absent officials in Washington: The round comes out of the barrel of an AR-15 at 3000 ft. per second. It is designed to tumble and when it hits a body it ricochets off the internal organs, tearing tissue and bouncing off bones.

There is no reason a civilian should own this weapon.

Where are my senator and congresswoman? Hiding and out of sight as usual.
