Letter: So, Rep. Noel says cars are pollution free? Let's put it to the garage test

Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune Exhaust from cars stopped in traffic at 1700 South 700 East, Salt Lake City, Thursday December 12, 2013.

So state Rep. Mike Noel of Kanab allegedly said, “Every vehicle that is sold nowadays is 100 percent pollution free.” This was in a statement arguing against a proposed state program to do emissions testing on some diesel-powered vehicles. I say “allegedly” because it was, was after all, reported in that liberal rag (Pulitzer Prize-winning) Salt Lake Tribune.

Now I’m not saying the proposed law is good or bad. But what I would like to propose is that Rep. Noel perform the following test to verify the veracity of his statement.

Take any brand new car equipped with an internal combustion engine and drive it into his garage. Leave the car running, open all the windows of the car and shut the garage door. Now go sit in the car. After, say, 30 minutes, open the garage and report how he’s doing.

If he’s OK after half an hour, I’ll concede his point. If not, well ...
