An Amber Alert was issued in Colorado. The boy and a 60-year-old man were found naked, approaching campers in Utah.

David G. Freeman, 60, was charged Tuesday, June 26, 2018 with a first-degree felony count of child kidnapping, which carries the possibility of up to life in prison, in connection with an Amber Alert out of Colorado.

The report said two naked people were harassing campers near Panguitch Lake in south central Utah.

Two deputies from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office went to investigate Sunday night, but couldn’t find the pair. Then on Monday, there was another sighting — this time near Bear Paw Resort. A probable cause statement says the description matched the people seen the night before and those identified in an Amber Alert that had been issued out of Colorado.

Deputies arrested David G. Freeman, 60, clad only in a blanket someone at the resort had given him. On Tuesday, the Garfield County Attorney’s Office charged Freeman with a first-degree felony count of child kidnapping, which carries the possibility of up to life in prison. Freeman also was charged with misdemeanor counts of lewdness involving a child and reckless endangerment.

The boy was reported missing in Saguache County, Colo., about 500 miles from where he and Freeman were found. The probable cause statement said deputies gave him some clothes when they found him.

According to prosecutors, the boy told deputies he and Freeman had left Colorado three days earlier. They stopped in Escalante, Utah, and purchased tents and sleeping bags.

But, for reasons that aren’t made clear in the report, they spent Sunday night without any clothes, the 12-year-old boy told deputies, adding that they slept outside on the ground nude. They went to campers around Panguitch Lake, looking for food, the boy told deputies.

Freeman said little to the deputies, the report says, but said the boy was better off with him. Freeman accused the boy’s father of beating the child with a belt, the deputy wrote.

The probable cause statement notes the FBI is investigating federal charges. Freeman’s first court appearance in Utah’s Sixth District Court is scheduled for Wednesday.
