Ogden • Authorities have identified a teenager killed by an avalanche while snowmobiling north of Salt Lake City.

Chase Adams, 18, was killed Saturday afternoon while snowmobiling with his father in Farmington Canyon north of Salt Lake City, the Davis County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

It took search and rescue crews about a half-hour to find and dig out the teen, who died at a hospital in Salt Lake City. The teen had an avalanche beacon and an inflatable backpack that’s meant to help avoid being buried, but the backpack did not deploy.

Ben Adams, the victim’s father, said in a statement released by the sheriff’s office that he was grateful for the help of rescuers and others who responded to the avalanche.

“I am an extremely strong man and in the moment of physical need to save my son my strength availed nothing. I was useless and shifted my strength to God,” the statement said.
