Suspect in custody after active shooter report at Indiana middle school

Two people have been injured in a shooting at a middle school in a suburb north of Indianapolis, according to the Indiana State Police.

The Noblesville, Indiana, fire department tweeted shortly before 9:40 a.m., saying a shooting had occurred at Noblesville West Middle School. The department said a suspect had been taken into custody.

Fire and police officials did not detail injuries, but WISH TV in Indianapolis reported that a 13-year-old student and an adult were in critical condition. The station reported that the school had been placed on lockdown and a SWAT team was sweeping the building.

Sgt. John Perrine, a spokesman for the Indiana State Police, wrote on Twitter the injured were en route to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis shortly after 10 a.m. The victims’ families had been notified and students were being taken to Noblesville High School, he wrote.

WISH TV also reported that students at the scene had heard several shots, but they weren’t sure whether they originated inside or outside the building.

No other details were immediately available.

Authorities scheduled a news conference on the incident for 11 a.m.
