Utah counties to issue $2 billion in bonds to support oil railroad

The railroad would be privately owned and operated, but it is still eligible for tax-free borrowing if a public entity sponsors the bond issue, the group argues.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Crude oil is transferred from tanker trucks to rail cars parked at the Wildcat Loadout near Helper. The old coal-handling facility has been repurposed for transloading oil that is trucked from the Uinta Basin and shipped by rail to Gulf Coast refineries. Similar facilities along with an 85-mile rail spur are under development in the basin.
