Springville police officers shot and killed a man after authorities say he attacked an officer with a knife Saturday, according to a news release from the Springville Police Department.
One officer was also injured in the confrontation, according to police.
The police shooting unfolded after neighbors called police at around 10:25 p.m. that evening to report that a woman was screaming and crying.
When officers arrived, according to the news release, a man “abruptly” came outside and “attacked one of the officers with a large knife.”
Both officers at the scene, including the one hurt, drew and fired their weapons at the man, Springville police Lt. Warren Foster confirmed Tuesday.
Police said the officers treated the man until medical help arrived and he was taken by ambulance to Utah Valley Hospital before succumbing to his injuries.
The officer who the man attacked was also hospitalized with a stab wound, according to the news release. That officer was later released from treatment and is expected to recover.
Foster said the department isn’t immediately identifying the man or releasing more details about him at the request of his family. It’s unclear whether police intend to in the future.
The Utah County Metro “Officer Involved Critical Incident” team is investigating the Springville police shooting, as is protocol.
The two officers who opened fire on the man were both placed on paid administrative leave.
