Ogden • An Ogden police officer was shot Tuesday afternoon and is being treated at a hospital, Ogden police officials said.

The officer, whose name was not released, is considered stable, Ogden police Lt. Will Farr said.

The shooting unfolded after Ogden police were called to the scene of a reported protective order violation, Ogden police Deputy Chief Jake Sube said during a news conference Tuesday evening. The violation was reported at about 3:26 p.m. at the Washington Park Apartments complex, located at 170 N. Washington Blvd.

Upon arrival, the initial responding officer encountered an armed man, and an “exchange of gunfire” ensued, Sube said.

Multiple officers soon descended on the scene, Sube said, noting that both police and the armed man fired “multiple rounds.” During the shootout, one of the officers was struck by gunfire.

That officer was still receiving treatment at the hospital where they were taken as of about 6 p.m., Sube said.

The armed man was shot by Ogden police and died at the shooting scene, according to Sube. The man was not immediately identified as of Tuesday evening.

The apartment complex where the shooting unfolded sits just south of Ogden-Weber Technical College. The college was put on lockout for more than an hour because of the shooting, an official with the college said.

At the complex Tuesday evening, multiple police cars could be inside, along with yellow crime scene tape, which was cutting off access to one area of the complex. Police also were situated at the front of the complex, allowing some cars in while turning others away.

Sube called the shooting “highly chaotic and rapidly evolving.” He did not release more information Tuesday evening, citing the ongoing investigation, which is being conducted by the Weber-Morgan “critical incident task force.”

All of the officers involved in the police shooting Tuesday were placed on administrative leave, per department protocol.

During the Tuesday news conference, during which Sube took no questions, Sube recognized the officers for the “bravery they displayed” during the shooting.

“They faced significant danger and acted swiftly and decisively to protect the public,” he said.

The shooting marked the 11th police shooting in Utah so far this year, according to a database maintained by The Salt Lake Tribune.

It’s been just over three years since another Ogden officer was shot. On May 28, 2020, officer Nathan Lyday died after a suspect opened fire on officers who were investigating the man for domestic violence.

An Adult Probation and Parole agent was also shot but survived. Officers returned fire and the shooter, 53-year-old John Coleman, was killed.

The department recently paid tribute to Lyday on their Facebook page.
