Denise Hagman had to call her husband, Ed, home from work for a “good surprise” — once she stopped shaking.

The surprise was a giant check for $1 million, with Ed Hagman’s name on it, delivered Friday to the Hagmans’ home in Herriman by the “Prize Patrol” for the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes.

Ed Hagman was “beyond ecstatic” when he learned he had won, said Danielle Lam, a member of PCH’s Prize Patrol — which arrived unannounced to the family’s home with the check, balloons and flowers.

Denise Hagman, Lam said, “put her hands to her face and screamed with delight” when she saw the giant check.

Several neighbors walked by, stopping to shout “congratulations” and take photos of the scene at the Hagmans’ front door, Lam said.

According to Lam, the Hagmans plan to use the money to pay off their debts, take a vacation to Hawaii, and buy a new pickup truck.

On its website, Publishers Clearing House boasts that it has given out $483 million in prizes since the company was founded in 1953.

PCH is a “direct-to-consumer company” that makes its revenue through direct advertising, search advertising, and selling merchandise — particularly magazine subscriptions, which is how the company got its name.
