Did you name your baby Oliver or Olivia last year? If so, you are not alone.
Those were the most popular names for newborns in Utah in 2020, according to the Social Security Administration. There were 266 Olivers and 249 Olivias, so in a few years it’s entirely possible there will be multiple kindergartners in the same class sharing those names.
And not just in Utah. Olivia was also the No. 1 name for girls nationally, and Oliver was No. 3 for boys.
Utah’s list includes names that the newborns’ great-grandparents would have found familiar — Henry, Theodore, Samuel, Ezra and Calvin for boys; and Evelyn, Hazel, Ava, Nora and Eleanor for girls.
There were, by the way, 105 boys named Maverick (No. 59 on the list), and 91 girls named Luna (No. 27).
In a presidential election year, 299 newborn Utah boys shared a first name with the new commander in chief — Joseph, which was No. 27 on the list. The first name of the now-former president, Donald, does not appear on the SSA’s list of the 103 most popular boys’ names in the state.
