The Salt Lake Tribune is pioneering one path forward for local news. See its playbook here

In 2019, The Tribune became the country’s first nonprofit metro news organization

(AP file photo) The Salt Lake Tribune in Salt Lake City became a nonprofit news organization in 2019.

As a nonprofit news organization, we have a clear charitable mission: to engage, educate and empower Utah readers with reporting that informs and advances public dialog.

With support from the Google News Initiative, The Tribune published a playbook in December 2020 that captured the learnings from our transition from a for-profit organization to a nonprofit. The playbook is embedded below.

We recognize that one solution does not fit all and we are also eager to connect with others who have an interest in our model.
