A 10-year-old girl was taken to a hospital in critical condition after she was hit by a car while inside an apartment building, according to the South Salt Lake Police Department.

A car drove into an apartment in the 300 block of Summer Pine Drive on Friday around 2:15 p.m. Photos show that the car created a gaping hole in the wall of the apartment. The crash caused a gas leak in the apartment building.

South Salt Lake Police Spokeswoman Danielle Croyle said an infant that was in the apartment was also taken to the hospital as a precaution but seems to be unharmed. The woman who drove the car was taken to the hospital but has since been released.

The crash is under investigation by police. No information has been released about what caused the crash.

The police department originally said the child was 12 in a Facebook post, but Croyle said she was actually 10.
