Police arrest man in connection with fatal Salt Lake City shooting

Glendale residents reported hearing gunshots at about 2 a.m. on Saturday.

One man died and another has been arrested after a shooting in Salt Lake City early Saturday morning, according to police officers.

Salt Lake City Police Department Sgt. Keith Horrocks said officers were called to 1100 West and California Avenue in Glendale around 2 a.m. after neighbors reported hearing gunshots. Police found a man lying in a driveway with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital but died of his wounds.

The victim was later identified as 28-year-old Emilio Salazar.

On Saturday afternoon, the Salt Lake City Police Department arrested and booked Alex Mendoza, 19, of the Salt Lake area, on charges of murder involving a firearm. It is unclear whether he has a prior record.

The department is trying to get guns away from people with prior felony convictions, said Horrocks. He said it might seek federal charges if the suspect in the case turns out to have a felony conviction. That decision will ultimately be left up to the United States District Attorney’s office.
