Crash in Taylorsville leads to shots fired, two people hospitalized

A traffic accident involving a stolen vehicle in Taylorsville on Tuesday night led to gunfire and ended with two people hospitalized, two others in police custody and one suspect still at large.

According to FOX 13, Unified police reported that a group of motorcyclists was traveling west on 5400 South at about 7:30 p.m. when one of them was struck by a person driving a stolen Jeep as it turned into a parking lot near 1900 West.

At least one of the bikers followed the Jeep into the parking lot to confront the driver, which led to an altercation, Sgt. Melody Cutler told FOX 13.

After one of the bikers pulled out a gun, a bystander — who didn’t see the accident and didn’t know what was happening — pulled out his own gun in an effort to intervene, Cutler said. Several shots were fired and the passenger in the Jeep, identified as a man in his early 20s, was hit.

As of Tuesday night, police did not know who shot the passenger. Cutler said both shooters were in police custody and cooperating with the investigation.

The driver of the Jeep, which had been stolen in Weber County, fled with the gunshot victim. The driver abandoned the Jeep at a nearby car wash and called police to say he had left his friend there. The passenger was transported to a hospital, where he was reported in critical condition.

The biker who was struck by the Jeep was hospitalized in fair to serious condition.

Police are investigating to determine if charges are warranted for either of the people who fired shots.
