Utah woman had drugs, cash and her young child in a car when she crashed, police say

A Utah woman is facing almost a dozen charges after she was involved in a traffic accident and police discovered she didn’t have a driver license — but she did have a variety of drugs and almost $3,000 in cash in the car with her 16-month-old child.

According to a probable cause statement, Salt Lake City police were called to a traffic accident at 800 East 2100 South on Sept. 17 and discovered the 21-year-old woman had “swerved around a bus” and “rear ended” another car, which had stopped at a crosswalk. The suspect had a learner’s permit, and there as no licensed driver in her car — just her toddler.

Police wrote that the suspect was “belligerent” and said “she needed to be arrested or she would assault the police officers,” so they placed her in custody. Her behavior was “erratic,” according to police; she alternated between “nodding off” and “yelling and screaming,” and her “balance was poor.”

The woman refused to perform a field sobriety test, but consented to a blood draw, according to police. According to a probable cause statement, toxicologists reported that the suspect’s blood contained cocaine and clonazepam, also known commercially as Klonopin, which is used to treat seizures, anxiety and nerve pain.

The suspect’s car was impounded and, according to police, when it was searched officers found 148 grams of heroin; 63 grams of methamphetamine; 32 20-mg doses of the muscle relaxant Baclofen; 12 grams of cocaine; 317 oxycodone pills; 5 grams of THC concentrate; 18 Suboxone pills (used to treat opioid addiction); five dextroamphetamine pills (also known commercially as Dexedrine, used to treat ADHD); 36 amphetamine pills, 40 grams of marijuana; and $2,985.79 in cash.

The suspect was first transported to the Salt Lake County jail, then to a hospital after she said she had taken 28 Xanax, according to the probable cause statement. It goes on to say that, when she was returned to the jail, the suspect kicked a nurse in the back.

The woman has been charged in Third District Court with three counts of possession of a controlled item with intent to distribute, first-degree felonies; possession or use of a controlled substance, a third-degree felony; endangerment of a child, a third-degree felony; driving under the influence, a Class A misdemeanor; possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class B misdmeanor; careless driving, a Class C misdemeanor; and driving without a license, an infraction.
