Utah man charged after he shot a 9-year-old boy while target shooting

A Utah man has been charged after he inadvertently shot a 9-year-old boy while target shooting in Sanpete County.

Camryn Daniel Summerhays, 27, has been charged in Sixth District Court with felony discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony; and two counts of reckless endangerment, class A misdemeanors.

On Nov. 23, Summerhays was target shooting near U.S. 89 near Mount Pleasant, Sanpete County, when a bullet he fired struck a 9-year-old who was riding in the back seat of a vehicle headed north. The boy was hit in the shoulder; he was transported to the Utah Valley Hospital, where the bullet was removed. He survived the wound.

According to police, Summerhays and members of his family were “negligently target shooting in the direction of the highway” without a backstop. The bullet that struck the boy was fired from about 750 yards away, police said.
