Layton investigators looking for person who set a fire in an LDS meetinghouse

The Layton Fire Department is asking for the public’s help to identify the person or persons who started a fire at a Latter-day Saint meetinghouse Monday afternoon.

According to a department spokesman, someone ignited curtains in the gym of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ building at 1715 W. 1600 North shortly before 3 p.m. A group of missionaries was playing football nearby, and when they entered the church to use the restroom they smelled smoke, found the fire and quickly doused it with a fire extinguisher.

The missionaries also saw a car drive quickly from the scene but were unable to get a license plate number.

Layton officials are asking anyone who might have seen anything — and anyone in the area who has a security camera that might have recorded something — to contact them at 801-336-3940.
