Woman killed, boy critically injured in Draper house fire

A woman was killed and a 6-year-old boy was seriously injured when fire destroyed a Draper home early Tuesday morning.

The fire at a home near Wheadon Park was reported at 12:48 a.m., according to Draper Fire Department officials, and crews arrived to find the two-story log home engulfed in flames. Four of the five residents — a mother, father, 10-year-old girl and the injured 6-year-old boy — escaped; the children’s grandmother, who was in her 60s, did not.

Their names have not been released.

The boy, who suffered burns and smoke inhalation, was flown by helicopter to Primary Children’s Hospital in critical but stable condition. Two first responders — a police officer and a firefighter — were treated at Lone Peak Hospital for heat exhaustion and released.

According to Draper Fire, there is road construction going on in the area and the fire hydrant closest to the fire was not working.

There was no immediate estimate of the damage, but the home appeared to be a total loss, fire officials said. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
