Salt Lake police identify man shot and killed by an officer

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Law enforcement investigating the scene of a shooting at the Sunrise Metro apartments, 580 South 500 West in Salt Lake City on Monday, July 15, 2019.

Salt Lake Police have identified the man shot and killed by an officer on Monday as 43-year-old Michael Brand.

Police were called to the Sunrise Metro apartments, 580 S. 500 West, at about 1:30 p.m. Monday, after someone reported a problem involving a person with a mental illness. According to police, Brand produced a weapon and one of the officers shot him.

Police have not released further details of the incident; they have not specified what kind of weapon Brand was allegedly carrying.

The officer who shot Brand also accidentally shot a fellow officer in the shoulder. The wounded officer was treated at a hospital and released.

A search of court records found Brand was arrested four times in 2018, on misdemeanor charges such as shoplifting, intoxication, trespassing and disorderly conduct.

SLCPD will release body camera footage of the incident no later than July 25; city policy calls for the release within 10 days. The department is expected to release further information then.

Because its officers are involved in the shooting, Salt Lake City police have handed the investigation over to Unified Police.
