Twelve students became combatants Sunday in a fight at a St. George school, and some of the teens suffered injuries.
Five of those students were taken to a juvenile detention facility, said St. George police officer Tiffany Atkin, a spokeswoman for the department. She said the suspected charges were for serious assaults or similar offenses related to the fight.
The fight happened on Sunday evening at Red Rock Canyon School, 747 E. St. George Blvd. Atkin said some of the students suffered “mostly bumps and bruises. One had to have some staples put in the back of their head after being hit ... with something.”
At least two staff members were assaulted but declined to receive medical attention at the scene, Atkin said. She added that there was no gunfire or stabbings at the school, and said more than those five apprehended students could face charges as police and prosecutors sort out what happened.
St. George Boulevard is a major thoroughfare in the city. Traffic was obstructed for much of Sunday night.
The school’s website describes the facility as a “psychiatric residential treatment center" for people ages 12 to 18. The website describes multiple types of therapies and a staff that includes counselors, psychiatrists and psychologists. A phone message left for staff was not returned Monday.
Washington County Attorney Brock Belnap, in an email Monday, said his office had been notified the five suspects were scheduled to see a juvenile court judge later in the day. Belnap expected a decision about whether to file criminal charges to be made within a week.
