5-year-old girl in critical condition after being hit by SUV near Centerville school

A 5-year-old Centerville girl is in critical condition after being run over by an SUV near an elementary school Friday.

Charlotte Healey is being treated at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, with a broken leg and an apparent brain injury, Centerville police said in a statement.

Police say Charlotte and her older sister were walking at 8:37 a.m. Friday to Reading Elementary School, at 360 W. 2025 North in Centerville, in their neighborhood. Charlotte apparently ran into 2025 North, just west of the school, and into the path of a Chevrolet Suburban.

The driver of the Suburban, a Farmington woman, told police she did not see Charlotte, but felt a thud when the vehicle hit the girl. According to the police report, the driver said she was gong about 20 mph, the typical speed limit in school zones. Charlotte’s older sister witnessed the accident, and ran home to tell her mother.

An off-duty deputy/paramedic who lives in the neighborhood was administering first aid to Charlotte before South Davis Metro Fire Department paramedics arrived. Charlotte was flown by helicopter to Primary.

The accident is still being investigated, Centerville police said.
