A Glendale musician has been shot and killed by Salt Lake City police — one of two people fatally shot by Utah officers on Friday night.
Cody Belgard — better known as the musician “See Smoke,” according to a number of online memorials — was shot by police at 8 p.m. Friday near 800 N. Sir Patrick Drive, said Sgt. Brandon Shearer.
Shearer said Friday night that he didn’t know why police were in the area before they shot the Belgard, 30. Salt Lake City police released Belgard’s name on Saturday morning and said there would be no further updates over the weekend.
West Valley City Police are investigating the shooting, under the valley-wide protocol that mandates an outside agency investigate police shootings.
The other shooting was in Ogden, where police said they were called to the Walmart at 1959 Wall Ave. on a report of a man — described only as white and in his late 30s — acting “violently," according to a news release.
An officer stopped the man in his vehicle in the parking lot. As the officer was talking to the man, he sped away and crashed, and then tried to run away. Officers chased him, and the man allegedly “turned aggressively toward officers with a weapon.” Police tried to use less than lethal force on the man, but two officers shot him when that was unsuccessful, according to the release.
The Weber County Attorney’s Office will investigate the shooting.
