A man who fled the country when he was charged with sodomy, aggravated sexual abuse and object rape of a child in Layton two years ago has been apprehended.

According to the U.S. Marshals, Brian Helton was staying with a family friend in Layton in 2016 when he sexually abused a child who lived in the home on “at least two separate occasions over a two-week period.” When the child told the parents what happened, Helton fled to Chicago, and then then left the country for Thailand. According to the U.S. Marshals, he “began to suspect the Royal Thai Police were getting close to making an apprehension,” so Helton “fled again, this time to Japan in an attempt to sneak back into the United States.”

On Wednesday, Japanese officials alerted U.S. authorities that Helton was boarding a flight to San Francisco, where he was “quickly taken into custody without further incident.”

“It doesn’t matter where in the world the fugitive chooses to run, they will eventually get caught, said Supervisor Deputy U.S. Marshal Derryl Spencer in a prepared statement.
