African Restaurant, 1878 S. Redwood Road, in Salt Lake City was forced to close Tuesday after health inspectors found live cockroaches and more than a dozen other health violations.
“There are live cockroaches of varying sizes, including nymphs, in the establishment,” a report posted on the Salt Lake County Health Department website states.
The report also notes that “shoes are on a shelf next to the rice.”
In all, there were 19 health code violations, including several deemed critical to human health.
The restaurant will remain closed until the owners can fix the problems and inspectors deem it safe for the public.
Among the other problems found:
• Dishes are not sanitized after cleaning.
• No certified food safety manager is employed; not all employees have current food handler cards.
• Various floor surfaces are damaged; floor is dirty under the cooking equipment.
• Dumpster area is not maintained; there is litter, including a toilet on the ground around the dumpster.
