Two arrested after Provo police find body of apparent overdose victim inside a condo closet

A man and woman were arrested Friday in Provo after they reportedly hid a person’s body in a closet when he overdosed on drugs, instead of calling police.

The two 20-year-olds were using drugs with another man on April 7 at a Provo condo when the victim apparently overdosed. The man and woman were afraid to call police because the man was trying to get custody of his son, according to a probable cause statement filed in 4th District Court.

The man called his sister to tell her what happened and apparently told her he’d called a person named “Cupcake,” who has a “cleanup” crew. The crew was going to get rid of the body and evidence, according to the statement, but that never happened.

Provo police later got a tip about the body and found it in the home on April 13.

Officers found the two 20-year-olds on April 19 at a hotel in Provo. The two had been staying in the room without paying and had been using a copy of the room key to go in and out, according to the probable cause statement.

The woman reportedly wouldn’t let police into the hotel room, but claimed no one else was there. She showed police a video of the hotel room to prove her point, but in the video one could see the man hiding.

Officers also allegedly found meth paraphernalia and marijuana in the hotel room.

Police arrested the pair early Friday. They were booked into the Utah County jail on suspicion of abuse or desecration of a dead human body, obstruction of justice and drug-related offenses.
