Two children, one who uses a wheelchair, were saved Tuesday morning when firefighters responded to a fire in a West Valley City duplex.
The kids had inhaled some thick smoke, but were otherwise all right and didn’t need to go to the hospital.
A report of the fire came just before 7 a.m., Battalion Chief Jeff Fox said. Firefighters responded to the duplex at 5294 W. Ali Circle (3450 South) to find thick black smoke pouring from windows and the front door.
A woman was outside the home and told firefighters that her two children were stuck inside.
Fox said the crew knocked down the flames and entered the home where they found a 16-year-old girl in a wheelchair and a 7-year-old boy in a bedroom.
Fox said the fire was mostly contained to a bedroom but did start to creep into the living room. The children were in a separate bedroom from where the fire started, and the mother was asleep on the living room couch.
Fox said the fire was significant, but firefighters were able to knock it down before it spread much from the bedroom.
“There was a lot of fire coming out the window,” he said.
Fox said investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire and if anyone was in the room where it started.
