A 70-year-old man was killed Friday when he crashed into a pole while skiing a race course at Deer Valley Resort in Park City.

About 12:30 p.m., the man was skiing the resort’s National Standard Race, or NASTAR, course when he fell and crashed into a pole at the finish line, resort marketing director Coleen Reardon said.

He was flown from the resort to the University of Utah Hospital, and medics later pronounced him dead, resort communications manager Emily Summers said.

Summers said she couldn’t comment on the size of the pole or its purpose, aside from that it was part of the course.

Resort officials didn’t release the man’s name but said he was visiting Deer Valley with a group.

NASTAR is a public, grassroots ski racing program, that allows skiers to run courses and compare their times to other skiers, according to their website.

Deer Valley Resort has one NASTAR course, and races are held daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to the resort’s website.
