Family of Utah woman who died in jail sues county for $2M

Farmington • The family of a woman who died in jail has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Davis County.

The Standard-Examiner reported Sunday that the $2 million suit alleges the county jail deprived Kara Noakes of life-sustaining prescription medications after she was booked on a traffic-related offense in June 2016. Noakes died in her cell two days after her arrest.

Investigators closed the case as a “natural death,” but the suit seeks damages for deprivation of Noakes’ civil rights.

The suit also highlights Noakes’ bail, which was set at $1,900. It says a lower bail amount would be appropriate for someone with a heart condition who needs to stay on medicine.

County officials have declined to comment on Noakes’ case.
