West Valley City • A police officer who was shot Tuesday night is expected to survive, authorities say, though details surrounding the altercation remain unclear.
The shooting occurred about 7:30 p.m. at the Village at Rivers Edge apartment complex near 3300 South and 1200 West, West Valley City Deputy Police Chief Matt Elson said. The officer’s injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.
Police learned of the shooting over the radio.
“The officer indicated he’s been shot, and he was down,” Elson said.
Authorities would not say whether the injured officer, who has been on the force for three years, was on or off duty at the time of the shooting, nor did they say why he was at the complex.
Elson said officers are investigating two juveniles with gunshot wounds who arrived at a local hospital in a vehicle similar to one seen leaving the apartment complex shortly after the officer was shot.
The juveniles — who police only described as under 18 — are expected to survive.
It’s unclear how or whether the three shooting victims are related, and Elson said Unified police will investigate.
When asked whether the juveniles were suspects, Elson said, “We’re still trying to figure out exactly what occurred. So we don’t know that answer yet.”
A multiagency team is investigating the shooting.
