New Disney Channel series starts filming in Salt Lake City

Production got underway this week in Salt Lake City on the new Disney Channel series "Andi Mack," which will debut in 2017.

The comedy features 12-year-old Peyton Elizabeth Lee — who has had small parts in "Scandal" and "Shameless" — in the title role as a youngster who's about to turn 13. According to Disney, when Andi's "capricious older sister Bex (Lilan Bowden) returns home with the hope of getting her life together, Andi's life is turned upside down and she is left questioning everything she's ever known."

The show is filming at various locations in and around Salt Lake City.

The cast includes Lauren Tom as Andi's mother, Celia; Joshua Rush as Andi't friend, Cyrus; Asher Angel as Andi's friend, Jonah; and Sofia Wylie as Andi's best friend, Buffy.

"Andi Mack" marks the return of creator/executive producer Terri Minsky to the Disney Channel. She's the woman behind "Lizzie McGuire" (2001-04), which became a pop-culture phenomenon and turned Hilary Duff into a star.
