‘Pi Day’ is almost here. Here are 5 new pie places to fill your flaky, crusty cravings.

Utah bakers have turned their hobbies into businesses that sell whole and mini-pies.

Looking for a sweet, fruit-filled pie for dessert? Or a savory pot pie for dinner?

Several Utah entrepreneurs have launched pie-baking businesses in recent months that make getting one of these flaky, baked treats — in whole and individual sizes — as easy as, well, pie.

This list comes just in time for “Pi Day.”

To understand the March 14 celebration, you’ll need to think back to high school geometry when you used the Greek letter pie (π) — or its decimal equivalent 3.14 — to figure the area and circumference of a circle.

It’s a concocted event, for sure, but if you don’t observe it, you’ll have to wait until Jan. 23 for what the American Pie Council says is the real National Pie Day.

Here are five new pie businesses that have opened within the past six months in the Salt Lake Valley:

Flake Pie Co.

With the personal-size pies sold at this South Jordan shop, you can enjoy pie every day — not just on special occasions, says owner Carol Timmons. She opened in November and has given cheeky names to her mini-treats like Raspberry Fields Forever and Sweet Child of Lime. Individual pies are $4.75 or three for $12.50.

The shop just launched a line of savory pies. They are $6 each and filled with chicken, barbecued pulled pork or vegetables. The business also sells toaster pastries called “flakies” — think Pop-Tarts — and custardlike pots de creme. Flakies are $1.50 each or three for $8.50; while pots de creme are $3.

Order ahead for pickup, or stop by the store at 1665 Towne Center Drive, No. 3, to see the daily offerings. All items are to go. Inside seating is not available. Open Monday to Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m; and Thursday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Call 385-342-2620 or visit flakepie.com.

Pie Fight

The struggle at this new bakery in Salt Lake City’s uber-popular 900 East and 900 South neighborhood is which fruit-filled hand pie to try first.

Flavors change, depending on the season, but right now there are blueberry lemon, apple crumble, pear brownies and cherry. The shop is open daily from 1 to 8 p.m. at 937 E. 900 South. Customers also can order online for pickup at thepiefight.com.

Pies The Limit

Dominique Wilson’s pie-baking hobby turned into a full-fledged bakery in 2020, when he opened this pickup-only shop in Salt Lake City. A native of Louisiana, Wilson said his father was an executive chef, so he always had an interest in cooking. But he also had a sweet tooth, so pies became his passion.

The menu for the 9-inch fruit and cream pies ($25 each) changes monthly with seasonal fruits and flavors. The specialty — blueberry sour cream — never leaves the rotation, he said. Savory dinner pies ($30) include chicken, roast beef, macaroni and cheese, and vegetable.

The full menu is available on Instagram at instagram.com/pies_the_limitut. Customers also can call or text 801-856-7511. Pickup is Tuesday and Friday at his commercial kitchen inside Valley Behavioral Health, 1020 S. Main, Salt Lake City.

Pie Party

Cori Norton, a self-taught baker, makes individual-size pies by hand using seasonal ingredients and flavor combinations like chai butter apple and chocolate-peppermint meringue.

She sells at the Winter Market at The Gateway, held Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Customers also can also get a taste of the treats when visiting Salt Lake City’s Three Pines Coffee shop. The pies are available Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. — or until they run out.

Norton says she takes online orders for major holidays only — not Pi Day. Visit piepartytime.com for details.

Your Pieness Bakery

At this micro-enterprise bakery, located in a home kitchen, customers are “royalty.” The menu includes hand pies and whole pies as well as cakes, cookies and eclairs for delivery.

Visit yourpienessbakery.com to see the options, but this new business is not yet set up for online orders. Customers need to call or text 801-871-5124 or email yourpienessbakery@gmail.com.
