From fast food to gourmet, 2017 Tacofest celebrates a favorite food from Mexico

Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune Tacofest will take place Saturday, Aug. 5, in Salt Lake City.

Celebrate one of the world’s simplest, yet most delicious foods — the taco — during Tacofest 2017 on Saturday, Aug. 5.

Eleven Utah restaurants and food trucks that excel at this Mexican specialty will gather outside the Mexican Civic Center in Salt Lake City for this daylong event. There will be music, children’s activities and competition for the best tacos.

Historians believe the taco first appeared around A.D. 1500 near the silver mines in Mexico. Through the centuries it has evolved, becoming a favorite dish from fast-food eateries to gourmet restaurants.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Meals on Wheels.
