‘Dreamscapes’ art installation closing Nov. 29, to move into a bigger space in 2021

The walk-through art installation “Dreamscapes” will end its current run at The Gateway on Thanksgiving weekend — but the dream isn’t ending, it’s just moving.

“Dreamscapes” will open for the last time at 110 S. Rio Grande, Salt Lake City — in the space once filled by The Gap — on Sunday, Nov. 29.

Artists will start work soon on the new “Dreamscapes” in a larger space, across the street at 111 S. Rio Grande, in the space that formerly housed the Abercrombie & Fitch clothing store and, more recently, the Salt & Honey artists’ co-op. The new installation is expected to open early next year.

“Dreamscapes” opened in March 2019, an Instagram-friendly effort by more than 100 artists, all using recycled materials — mostly tons of display material left behind by trade shows at the Salt Palace Convention Center. The show attracted some 50,000 ticket buyers in its first year.

Then, in March 2020, “Dreamscapes” was forced to close because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It reopened in June, after removing some exhibits — such as the Chuck E. Cheese-style ball pit — and replacing them with new works.

“Dreamscapes” is open Wednesdays through Sundays, noon to 9 p.m. (open until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays). Admission is $10; reserve a time slot at dreamscapesslc.org.

With the closure of “Dreamscapes,” the experimental theater group SONDERimmersive is ending its run of “The Carousel,” a socially distanced theater work that sends audience members — four at a time — to meet characters in different rooms of the art space. “The Carousel” will have its final performances Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 23 and 24; go to sonderimmersive.com to reserve a time slot.
