Sundance Institute to stream punk comedy ‘Dinner in America’ free to Utah residents

Sundance Institute will screen the film free to Utah residents, on Monday, Aug. 31, 2020, at 6:30 p.m. Mountain time.

The Sundance Institute’s outdoor screening series isn’t happening this summer — another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic — but the nonprofit arts group is holding a one-night at-home version.

Utah residents will get a free online screening of the romantic comedy “Dinner in America,” on Monday, Aug. 31, at 6:30 p.m. Mountain time. The screening will include a post-film Q&A with the filmmakers and cast.

“Dinner in America,” which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, is sort of a cross between “Sid & Nancy” and “Napoleon Dynamite.” Directed by Adam Carter Rehmeier, it follows the unlikely romance between Simon (Kyle Gallner), a nihilist punk rocker, and Patty (Emily Skeggs), a socially awkward young woman.

The movie is not rated, but would probably earn an “R” for violence, sexuality and language.

To register for the free screening, go to utah.sundance.org, make an account with Sundance Institute, and use the promo code SUNDANCELOCALS.
