Pulitizer Prize-winning writer Jennifer Egan will be in Salt Lake City on Monday to read from and sign copies of her latest book, “Manhattan Beach.”
The celebrated author will appear at The King’s English Bookshop. The event is free and open to the public.
“Manhattan Beach” is Egan’s first novel since “The Goon Squad” in 2011 — and she won a Pulitzer for that one. In the New York Times review of “Manhattan Beach,” Amor Towles wrote it is “a more traditional novel than the raucous and inventive ‘Goon Squad,’ although the two books offer many of the same pleasures, including fine turns of phrase, a richly imagined environs and a restless investigation into human nature.”
Time magazine named it one of the top 10 novels of 2017.
It’s the story of Anna Kerrigan, whom readers first meet in 1934, when she is 11. Anna accompanies her father, Eddie, to meet Dexter Styles at his mansion on Manhattan Beach in New York; Eddie is looking for work in Styles’ criminal operation to pay for a wheelchair for his paralyzed, brain-damaged daughter, Lydia.
The narrative continues when Anna is 14; when she’s 19, working in the Brooklyn Navy Yard during WWII, and becomes the first female underwater diver; and when she reconnects with Styles, who has risen in the ranks to become a crime boss while Anna searches for her long-missing father.
