‘Glee’ star will join ‘Mary Poppins’ and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for Pioneer Day concerts

The former star of “Glee” and his Broadway co-star will perform with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir at a pair of Pioneer Day concerts.

Matthew Morrison — who played “Glee” club director Will Schuester (aka “Mr. Schue”) for six seasons of the Fox TV musical — will reteam with Laura Michelle Kelly, his co-star in the Broadway production of “Finding Neverland.”

Morrison and Kelly will be the featured performers in, appropriately enough, Broadway-themed concerts scheduled for July 20 and 21 at the Conference Center.

Mormon Tabernacle Choir president Ron Jarrett called them “extraordinary performers who have a dynamic chemistry onstage that will delight our audiences” in a prepared statement. “We know they will bring down the house when they perform with the choir and orchestra at Temple Square.”

Morrison’s Broadway credits include “Footloose,” “The Rocky Horror Show,” “A Naked Girl on the Appian Way” and “South Pacific.” He originated the role of Link Larkin in “Hairspray” and was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in the “The Light in the Piazza.” He also had a recurring role as an abusive husband on “Grey’s Anatomy” over the past two seasons.

Kelly is best known for originating the title role in the London production of “Mary Poppins.” She later reprised her role on Broadway. Kelly co-starred in the 2007 movie version of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”

Morrison and Kelly will also appear on the July 22 broadcast of “Music and the Spoken Word.”

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s Pioneer Day performances will also include an appearance by Oscar “Andy” Hammerstein III, grandson of the famed lyricist and music theater producer, who will narrate a portion of the program focusing on the Broadway contributions of his family.

Tickets for the concerts are free and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Tuesday at 10 MDT, online at lds.org/events or by phone at 801-570-0080. Each patron may request four tickets, and admission is open to those 8 and older. Patrons without tickets are encouraged to join the standby line by the flagpole on Temple Square for last-minute seating.

The concert will be live streamed on mormontabernaclechoir.org at 8 p.m. on July 21 and later on BYUtv.

No tickets are required for the “Music and the Spoken Word” broadcast at 9:30 a.m. on July 22. Patrons should be in their seats by 9:15 a.m.
