Posted: 4:58 PM- That wasn't how the Utah Utes envisioned starting their season.

Center Luke Nevill scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds Saturday, but the Utes allowed 16 three-pointers and missed 11 free throws in a stunning 80-79 loss to Southwest Baptist, a Division II school from Missouri.

The Utes had a chance at the end, trailing by one with the ball at the Huntsman Center after Southwest Baptist's Tomas Brock missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity with 10 seconds left. But guard Lawrence Borha missed a wild shot with about three seconds left after racing the ball up the floor with no timeouts, and the clock ran out as the players fought for the rebound.

It was the second time in three years the Utes have lost their season opener at home against a lightly regarded opponent. Two years ago, it was Southern Utah that shocked the Utes, in former coach Ray Giacoletti's final season.
