UINTAH - The two incumbents in next month's City Council elections are all but guaranteed to be re-elected and the third seat is still wide open.

Any takers?

The only two candidates on the ballot are incumbents and nobody has even applied to run for the third spot. The deadline for write-in candidates is Tuesday.

''All they need is one vote and they'll be elected,'' said Sherma Mildon, the city's clerk/recorder.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old, a Uintah resident and a registered voter. Applicants can apply for free, but must do so in person. So far, nobody has.

Council members Gary Laird and Charles Thorsted are running unopposed for re-election. Thorsted said job security aside, it would be nice if there was more interest in local government in the Weber County community.

''Even though I'm running unopposed, I don't think it would be a bad thing to have some more competition,'' Thorsted said. ''Overall, I'd like to see people get a little more involved in their community. It's a little discouraging.''

Uintah sent out a newsletter in September informing residents about the lack of candidates. Instructions on how to file as a write-in candidate were included.
