"Mister Outdoors" Doug Miller, whose booming voice and easy-going manner have been a fixture on Utah television and radio for nearly 30 years, has been hospitalized the past two weeks with a near-deadly bout of diverticulitis.

The 59-year-old outdoors reporter, who has produced stories about Utah recreation for KSL television and radio and for KUTV Channel 2, complained of pain July 31 and was admitted to an undisclosed hospital for the condition, in which portions of the intestines become inflamed.

Miller remains in critical condition, according to KUTV general manager David Phillips.

"The doctors are pleased with his progress," he said Monday.

"He got to see his grandkids. He is doing better today."

Miller, who graduated from the University of Arkansas, began his broadcasting career in his hometown of El Dorado, Ark., and later called Razorback football games for local radio, according to a biography on KUTV's Web site.

In 1977, Miller moved to Utah, where he later became morning anchor for KSL Radio and then news director.

He also was KSL television's sports director in 1989.

Miller was the host of his own outdoors show on KSL Channel 5 before moving to KUTV in 2001 where he now is the host of "Outdoors with Doug Miller" every Saturday night at 11:05 p.m. The show currently is airing reruns and new episodes.

"Everybody I know thinks they want Doug Miller's job," Phillips said.

"But I don't know too many people that can handle the workload of that job. He works tirelessly. He writes everything and views every frame. Doug Miller is that show."
