Rochelle Hatch says she and friend Heather Hansen have long wondered why they couldn't find a speed dating scene for LDS singles.

So they've decided to start one of their own.

"We were sitting on the couch one minute and bemoaning our sad social situation, and said if it doesn't exist, why can't we make it exist?" said Hatch.

The two women held a kickoff event July 8 for Classy Introductions, a new business aiming to hold upscale gatherings to help men and women ages 22 to 55 meet others.

Beginning July 29, participants can meet and greet at cocktail-style gatherings in rotating five-minute intervals. Music and after-mingling will follow. At the end of the night, party-goers will turn in ballots listing their top choices of the opposite sex for the night.

Participants will be contacted within a week with information on matches made where each person expressed an interest in the other.

The idea for Classy Introductions began when Hatch and Hansen moved to Centerville to watch Hatch's parents' home while they served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The two felt sequestered from their Salt Lake City social ties.

They aren't big dancers, said Hatch. Both had tried their share of LDS meet-up Web sites that didn't seem to work.

"I don't connect that way," said Hatch, 40. " I have to see and hear a person in person to pick up on all of the clues someone is sending. People can be very hidden and deceptive when you're not seeing them, even for just a few minutes."

Hatch said they have had so much response, she is quitting her job as a newborn intensive care unit nurse. With a love of throwing elaborate parties, Hatch said it's been her calling to begin the business.

"To be honest, every New Year's Eve I just sat and wished there was some really classy, like you see on TV to go to," she said. "I see hors d'oeuvres, fancy drinks, black and white, I see a cocktail party."
